Frequently Asked Questions

What is cork leather?

Cork leather, is a high-quality natural fabric that comes from the cork oak tree, which grows primarily in the West Mediterranean Basin.  Once the tree has reached maturity, the bark is skillfully harvested every 8-10 years for the life of the tree, which can be over 200 years.  The bark is then allowed to dry for several months before being boiled, steamed, pressed, sealed and shaved into thin sheets that are attached to a cotton backing.  The entire process is chemical-free and results in an incredibly soft, pliable and durable fabric that is water-resistant, stain-resistant, antimicrobial and resistant to abrasions.  Cork leather is also extremely lightweight, making it a wonderful choice for handbags and wallets.  Besides being an eco-conscious and sustainable fabric, the best part just might be how uniquely stunning cork fabric is!

What makes cork leather an eco-conscious choice?

The bark of the cork oak tree regenerates after harvesting, so no harm is done to the tree.  It is even thought that the tree actually benefits from the removal of bark every 8-10 years, as the tree is able to absorb up to five times more CO2 after harvesting.  This also means that the harvesting of bark from the cork oak tree helps to reduce greenhouse gasses, making cork leather a wonderful environmentally friendly choice.
